Meeting the Legendary Mary McGee

When I think of women in the motorcycle world, women of impact, and well just women who own their badassery… I think of Mary McGee. Many have read my inspiration gathered from the life of Steve McQueen and the appeal he brought to Triumph. But I cannot say that I had conversations with the man that changed my direction in motorcycling. Well, Mary McGee can! This woman has a courageous heart with a spirit of adventure, and when Steve McQueen told her, ” Mary McGee you have got to get off that pansy road racing bike and come out to the Desert ” Mary replied, “And what gets dirty .” That was the bump it took, and a new passion was ignited, a love for dirt.

From Auto Racing to Motorcycle Racing

Speed and adrenaline speak to the history of this young lady. In the 1960’s she was road racing and in 1975 in the Baja 500, but before she bought her first motorcycle, she was driving cars and driving fast. McGee was an auto racer behind the wheel of Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, and Mercedes before she bought her first bike in 1957, a 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub!

Earning a Place in the AMA Hall of Fame

She has put rubber to the road since the 1950s, but it was not until 2012 that she finally got her street riding license. Having paved the way for many women racers in road racing, enduro, motocross, and most recently in the vintage racing classes, Mary has earned a place in the AMA Hall of Fame.

“ Never did I think I would be so fortunate to be inducted into the 2018 AMA HOF I am indeed a very lucky woman.” The impact that this woman has had on the industry and the lives of others could never fit into just one blog, maybe not even in just one book…but in my mini interview with Mary, her words and insight have a depth that only comes with 50+ years in the industry.

Mary's Advice for the New Generation of Riders

When asked about advice for the new generation of riders, Mary stated, “I don’t know how safe my advice is but I think it important that new riders start out on a small size motorcycle, even new street riders.  With a small-size bike, you learn better handling skills so later you can continue moving up in size.  There are a lot of used bikes on the market at good prices so take advantage.  I also think all new riders should have dirt riding experience which really gives you a better experience on how to handle and maneuver your motorcycle.”

In 2012 Mary was invited to speak at the AMA Women’s Conference and was welcomed by hundreds of Motorcycles, speaking to a crowd of 600+ female riders! Which then led to the honor of FIM 2012 Women Legend. The story of the invite is just as epic as the woman herself. “ I have invited to Monte Carlo all expenses including flying business class to the annual FIM Gala. The funny thing is I thought someone was pranking me so ignored it. I received another email that said I must give them an answer in 2 days.  Guess what I said!!  And that is how I was the FIM 2012 Women Legend .”
